Wind turbine ablaze at Ostermarsch, Germany

Windkraftanlage ausgebrannt

On the night of 31st December 2010 towards 11pm, a fire started at a height of 70m in the nacelle of a wind turbine at Ostermarsch (Lower Saxony, near the North Sea). The members of the Norden Fire Brigade stood by incapable of dealing with the fire, as their ladder is only 30 m long and debris was falling continually from the top of the wind turbine.

The fire spread to two of the three rotor blades, which finally broke away from the wind turbine and fell noisily to the ground in a field not far from the tower. There was no damage to the farm nearby.

The firemen were not able to extinguish the fire in the debris on the ground as the blades made of glass fibre and epoxy resin were burning from inside: not having managed to make openings in the blades using axes or saws, they were unable to introduce foam or water.

The fire brigade were not able to leave the site until 6 o'clock the following morning.
